Miss Marple guides the police detectives finding the murder weapon and MO while sorting through the complex set of relationships among all the players, and determine what the smelly dead fish exciting a dog indicates, concluding on a most convoluted vindictive plot. Shortly after, Lady Tressilian's devoted maid finds her mistress bludgeoned to death in bed a short time later. Treves is found dead from overexertion taking the hotel staircase when the lift was falsely labeled out of order the day after a dinner party at Lady Tressilian's home where he hinted mysteriously at a bizarre fatal arrow non-accident between boys. He also came back to England hoping to win over Audrey. He was dressed in white flannels and held four tennis racquets under his arm. Nevile Strange was coming down the stairs. It was an April day such as usually occurs at least once in a month, hotter than most of the June days to follow.

Miss Marple is visiting sick, spoiled old school friend Lady Camilla Tressilian at her Devon island estate, along with an eclectic group: tennis celebrity Neville Strange and his insecure wife Kay, co-heir to the late Matthew Tressilian's fortune, Neville's former wife Audrey still to Camilla's taste and her childhood friend and cousin Thomas Royde, a Malay planter who missed out on his true love to his brother who died in a car accident nearby, charming semi-gigolo Ted Latimer mutually attracted to Kay Strange and finally Freddie Treves, a retired solicitor.
